While the school year may be winding down, the EMES Library is getting ready for Summer Reading! A letter went home to families in the May 20th newsletter about the summer reading program. In addition to the all the "old" books in our library, we have just gotten in a shipment of new books from which students can also select books for their summer bookbags.
Here is a preview of recent books:
The Nexi Robot by Toney Allman
"Cynthia Breazeal was 10 years old in 1977. She went to see the movie Star Wars. Her favorite part about the movie was the robots." p. 4
And so begins a book about Nexi the social robot. The book includes information about robots, robot design, and scientists who are creating new kinds of robots. Illustrated with color photographs.
About Dogs by Bruce Johnson and Sindy McKay
This is a book designed for young children (K-1) to read with their families. Each two page spread has a page to be read by an adult and a page to be read by a child. Illustrated with many photographs of dogs at play and at work.
Sparky: The Life and Art of Charles Schulz by Beverly Gherman
This biography of the creator of the Peanuts comic strip starts, "From the beginning, Charles Shulz intended to draw cartoons -- the very best cartoons. He drew all the time. No matter where he was, he pulled out a stubby pencil and a wrinkled piece of paper so he could sketch a friend or copy a picture from the latest Big Little Books he collected. He noticed the way an arm popped out of a friend's shoulder or the way his collar curved aroun his neck." p. 11
The book is illustrated with photographs and many of Shulz's drawings including comic strips featuring Charlie Brown and his friends.
Belly Up by Stuart Gibbs
Belly Up is a nominee for the 2011/12 Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award (DCF). In April of 2012, students from 4th through 9th grade who have read at least 5 of the 30 books nominated can vote for their favorite. Belly Up takes place in a zoo/theme-park in Texas. The main character is a boy named Teddy who believes that the death of the zoo's mascot, a hippo named Henry, is not an accident.
Benny and Penny in The Big No-No! by Geoffrey Hayes
This a graphic novel (cartoon style book) for young readers. Benny and Penny are mice and brother and sister. Read this book to find out what happens when someone new moves in next door and Benny and Penny break the rules by going out of their own yard.
The Extraordinary Mark Twain (According to Susy) by Barbara Kerley
This picture book is a fictionalized account of true story about Mark Twain and his daughter. When Susy Clemens was 13 she decided that she would keep a journal and write a biography about her famous father. The book includes excerpts from Susy's journal and a selected timeline of Mark Twain's life.
