Dorothy's Book Club at EMES -- 2017/2018 books

I am so excited that Mrs. Shedd and Ms. Gallagher will be running book club with me this year.  For the past 4 years (I think this is year 5), 4th-6th grade students have participated in a book club focused on Vermont's middle grade book award.

30 books are nominated for the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Book Award each year.  In April 4th-8th grade students who have read 5 or more of the year's nominees will vote for their favorite book.

Last year's winner was The Terrible Two by Mac Barnett and Jory John.

At EMES we pick a book (sometimes two) to explore at a book club meeting and we host about 6 or 7 meetings a years.  We discuss books, play games, do activities, and share a special snack.  All book club meetings are held in the EMES Library.  Any 4th-6th grade student who has read the book for that meeting is encouraged to attend.

This year's schedule is:

  • How a book makes the list/Meet the books Tuesday Oct 10th 5:30-6:30

-- Jane Knight of Bear Pond Books has served on the Dorothy's List book nominating committee for years.  She will tell us how a book makes the list and share some of her favorites from this year's list

  • It Ain't So Awful Falafel or/and Save Me a Seat -- late November
  • Some Writer! The Story of E.B. White - January
