I am reading a book called The Book Whisperer by Donalyn Miller. The author is a classroom teacher who is writing about her literacy work with 6th grade students and she sets high expectations for all her students. Ms. Miller expects all her students to read a total of 40 books from across a range of genres (categories for books). She does all this within a classroom culture that makes it ok for students to stop reading a book they don't like and one where kids can also read a book multiple times. I have decided to take on her 40 book challenge and push myself to read kinds of books that I don't always read for pleasure. So here goes...starting today and before the last day of school I will read 40 books. Because I am an adult who gets to read books at work, I will not count my picture books towards my 40, but will share them in my reading responses.
Here is my Challenge List:
Poetry: 5
Traditional literature: 5
Realistic fiction: 5
Historical fiction: 2
Fantasy: 4
Mystery:2
Science fiction: 2
Informational: 4
Biography, autobiography, memoir: 2
Chapter-book choice: 9
Anyone want to take on this challenge with me?
